Maria Laura Spagnoli was born in Amelia (Italy) in 1960. She completed her studies of music history at the University of Rome and her film production studies at the University of Bologna. From 1982 to 1989, she functioned as an assistant director at the staging of several operas. After that, she took up an internship with the director Nanni Loy and was accepted into the Rossini Opera Academy in Pesaro. In 1988, just after writing and directing a short theatre play, she began working with Werther Germondari. Her short films have been shown at hundreds of international film festivals and were part of the official selection at Cannes in 1994. Several retrospectives have been dedicated to her work. In recent years, she chose a new career path and specialised on restoring cultural heritage. Occasionally, she still works with Werther Germondari on his project Tractatus logico-phileroticus.
